Today was a really great day at the post office. Yeah, still super busy as hell (people still ordering textbooks + Valentines Day packages), but it seemed like my boss, co-workers, and I were all in a fairly good mood. Lots of teasing went around, laughs, and good times. But then it got better!

So whenever someone wants to mail a package, we take the package from them and place it on this scale thing so we can weigh it and therefore determine how much they need to pay for postage. After placing it on the scale, we go to the computer and input the zip code they’re sending it to (since the distance of the package also determines how much postage will cost). So in the midst of the chaotic room (line of students wrapping around the corner, workers flying about/bumping into each other finding the students’ packages and delivering them to them), this girl comes up and wants to send a package.

I place the package on the scale, and find the zip code to enter into the computer. 91006. I input the zip code, and it takes me a while to realize that that’s my hometown zip code. 91006. Right then and there, I kind of flip out, look back to the package to make sure I read it correctly, and see that the last line of the address is “Arcadia, CA 91006”…this girl is sending this package to someone who lives where I’m from!! Maybe you guys don’t understand why this is such a big deal, so I’ll tell you. NO ONE, and I mean no one has even heard of Arcadia whenever I tell them that that’s where I’m from. So after realizing that what I saw was correct, I literally squealed with excitement and couldn’t contain my utter joy. The dozen students waiting in line, my boss, and my coworkers all give me a confused glance, and I kinda laugh and tell them that this girl is sending a package to my hometown, and they all kinda laugh and nod with understanding (probably not clearing from their minds that I’m a psycho, though hehe). So then I reiterate to the girl that I’m from Arcadia, and she kinda lightens up, too. She said the package was going to her boyfriend who lives there, and then we talked about whether or not it would get there in time for Valentines Day (obviously not, sending the day before, but whatevs).

Overall, this small thing COMPLETELY made my day, and I still kinda jump around and smile big when I think about it. Right after I got off my shift, I went to lunch with two friends, and I practically screamed at them when explaining to them everything that happened. I then proceeded to call various friends from home to tell them the story, because I just couldn’t believe it. It’s reassuring and nice to know that someone else here has a connection with Arcadia, California. It brought me some odd sense of comfort, and I’ll never forget how such a small situation completely made my everything-else-wasn’t-that-great day into a fantastic one :)

happiness begins when selfishness ends.

Sasha Meyer. I'm a college freshman at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, but an original Southern California girl. I love making music, listening to music, and using it as my medicine and best friend when everything else seems to be falling apart. I hate unnecessary drama. I love the rain. Some people would say I'm quirky, and they're probably right. I like to do what makes me happy. I admire John Wooden, and whenever I'm upset with someone, something, or myself, I refer to his book which opens my eyes and makes me love again. My parents and my two older sisters are my role models. I appreciate the little things that people do. I love kids, and my dream is to be an elementary school teacher by day, and play in a community orchestra by night. I take things for granted, but I'm trying to stop. I don't believe you can ever laugh "too much."
