After feeling down all day when thinking about the fact that my boyfriend would most likely not have any wifi once he got over to Costa Rica, it was a very pleasant surprise when I saw “WAIT FOUND WIFI!!!!” in one of his limited texts.

We proceeded to FaceTime for about 15 minutes, and I got to talk with some other choir kiddos since apparently my voice was being projected out since Joe didn’t have earphones and they were in the room. It was nice seeing them, and it was awesome to share with them that over there, it was Joe’s birthday once midnight hit. While still FaceTiming, Ryan asked Joe if he wanted to go up to the bar on the 4th floor (how convenient, Costa Rica, lol) to take a shot together in honor of Joe turning 21. Not that being 21 makes a difference in the eyes of Costa Rican bartenders, but whatever…celebratin’ the ‘Murican way.

We hung up on FaceTime and said goodnight, and I get a text from Joe about 3 minutes later saying “LOL [PIANO PROFESSOR’S NAME HERE] JUST BOUGHT ME A SHOT OF SCOTCH AND A BEER FOR MY BIRTHDAY” annnnnd it was awesome. The power of a small liberal arts school, everyone. Professors looking out for their kiddos and buying them birthday drinks!~

As Amanda pointed out to me: it’s one thing to miss him from home, since that’s not as hard because I’m not used to having him in that “world.” But when I’m in my room and walking around campus, I just think about the lack of him, since I know this “college world” with him in it. It makes a lot of sense, but that doesn’t make it any easier. However…knowing that Joe is already having a fantastic time on his first night there is very satisfying to me and will make all of my lonely and sad feelings worth it when he comes back in 10 days to share his fun stories, experiences, and pictures with me.

When your boyfriend is in another country for 11 days for his choir tour. 25 texts each day. High probability of no wifi the entire duration of his trip. It’s sucky.

HOWEVER! When you see his name across the screen of your phone notifying that he texted you…AHHHH!! :) :) gets me each of the 3 times it’s happened so far. So worth it.

This will be hard, but I know we can do it. I love him so much and am so excited for him to get this experience abroad and share the stories and photos with all of us here in Oregon when they get back :)
